International Study Tours

LEADERSHIP INNOVATION runs a number of international study tours. These are:

South Africa/England Study Tour

This is run every second year in the ‘odd’ years. The tour includes 13 days in Durban, South Africa where participants are able to explore and observe a different education system that is being built in a post-apartheid, democratic environment. It is a regionally centralised system and has its origins in the New Zealand system of the mid to late ‘90’s. Educators have made remarkable strides forward in democratizing schools and classrooms.

The primary learning areas here focus on first, second and third language acquisition. In New Zealand our students often struggle to learn more than one language. How is it that many children in South Africa leave school speaking three languages?

The 11 days in England focus of current practice and systemic changes. New Zealand education tends to follow trends in England. By exploring what is trending in England, it is possible to forecast likely changes in New Zealand. This is particularly useful for school leaders. It allows them to ‘get ahead of the game’ and explore possibilities in their own schools.

Where possible, arrangements are made for participants to ‘homestay’ with local Principals. This allows for the ‘after-dinner’ conversations as well as an opportunity to network and socialise in different contexts. Participation is by application to Jeremy Kedian at jeremy@leadershipinnovationnz.co.nz.

A maximum of 8 participants are accepted for this study tour.

Australia Study Tours

Two study tours to Queensland are arranged each year. The first is usually in the last week of May and the second is in the first week of August. The Queensland education system is centralised and offers an alternative perspective to the NZ system. Participants work with principals and staff of local schools, primarily in the South Gold Coast region.

This tour is a one week PL opportunity. The group leaves Auckland on a Sunday morning and returns the following Saturday.

The cost of this study tour includes accommodation in luxury apartments at Burleigh Heads, air fares, koha’s to schools and car hire. The group meets each afternoon on their return from the school visits in a facilitated dialogue session focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of observed practice during the day and how some elements could be included in the participants’ schools on their return.

Details of this study tour are available from Jeremy Kedian at jeremy@leadershipinnovationnz.co.nz or 027 2895 954.

“The quality and depth of the professional dialogues we embarked on are unequalled in my 13-year career as a principal.”
