Emerging Leaders Programme

Introduction

LEADERSHIP INNOVATION NZ offers in-school an emerging leaders programme. These are offered at two levels. The first level is for less experienced teachers who show interest in developing as leaders. These leadership positions may be syndicate or team leadership, head of department or faculty – or assistant positions in these contexts. Participants can self nominate or be identified by senior leaders in the organisation.

The second level is for students who have been identified as potential leaders in the school. These may be as prefects, sports leaders, or leaders in the field of arts and other areas of school life. These potential leaders may be identified by the staff or self-nominated.

The Programme

The Emerging Leaders Programme is a two or three-day programme specifically tailored to the needs of a particular school context. This programme is commonly utilised in somewhat larger schools where there is a greater need to create a group of potential leaders who could become syndicate or group leaders in the primary sector or faculty or departmental leaders in the secondary sector.

There are some generic elements to the programme. These are:

  • developing shared notions of leadership
  • distinguishing between administration, management and leadership
  • what it means to act as a leader
  • dialogic approaches to group leadership
  • an introduction to coaching strategies
  • common issues associated with their experiences of leading

The balance of the programme is negotiated with the school Principal and, to a lesser extent, with the participants in the programme.

“The quality and depth of the professional dialogues we embarked on are unequalled in my 13-year career as a principal.”
